Black Obsidian

Black Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when molten lava cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. Its smooth, glassy texture and deep black color have made it a favored material for jewelry and tools since ancient times. Known for its sharp edges when fractured, it was historically used for blades and arrowheads. Today, it is cherished in beadwork for its bold, mirror-like appearance and subtle variations in sheen.

Black Obsidian forms when felsic lava extruded from a volcano cools quickly, preventing the growth of mineral crystals. This rapid cooling results in a glassy, amorphous structure. The stone is typically jet black, though inclusions of tiny gas bubbles can create a silvery or golden sheen known as sheen obsidian. Major sources include the United States, Mexico, Japan, and Iceland.

Black Obsidian is often associated with protection and grounding.
