Golden Obsidian

Golden Obsidian is a rare variety of obsidian formed from rapidly cooled volcanic lava. Its deep black base is interrupted by golden-brown iridescent bands or spangles, created by microscopic gas bubbles or mineral inclusions that scatter light. This natural glass has been used since ancient times for tools, ornaments, and spiritual objects, and today it is valued in jewelry for its dramatic, luminous appearance.

Golden Obsidian forms when felsic lava cools so quickly that crystals do not have time to grow, resulting in a glassy texture. The golden sheen is caused by tiny bubbles or layers of magnetite, hematite, or other minerals trapped within the glass during cooling. These inclusions reflect light, giving the stone its characteristic shimmer. Major sources include the United States (Oregon, California), Mexico, and parts of Central America.

Golden Obsidian is often associated with protection and grounding. Its reflective surface is thought to reveal hidden truths and ward off negativity. In metaphysical traditions, it is considered a stone of clarity, helping to cut through illusion and promote honest self-reflection. The golden inclusions are said to add an element of warmth and optimism, balancing the intense energy of black obsidian.

Clean Golden Obsidian with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap if needed. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and steam cleaning, as the stone can be brittle and may fracture. Store separately to prevent scratches from harder gemstones. Like all obsidian, it is sensitive to sudden temperature changes and prolonged direct sunlight, which may fade the golden sheen over time.
